Olivier Giroud: Stay or Nay?

There has been a lot of speculation regarding the Arsenal future of Olivier Giroud this summer.

He has always divided opinion among Arsenal fans, some think he’s not good enough while some think he gives us something extra. So here I will reflect upon his importance.

Here we are talking about a guy who is as handsome as one can be (though its not important) and was bought for mere 12 million euros. Since then, he has gone onto score 98 goals & provide 41 assists which is quite commendable in itself.

I think we should learn to appreciate what we have as there aren’t many strikers like him around, he’s the only one who can give us a plan B and his hold up play coupled with his heading ability, which is arguably the best in the league. I also think that nobody can question his work rate and commitment, he always gives his all for Arsenal Football Club.

The stick he receives is very uncalled for and undeserved for a player who performs regularly, is not afraid to be benched, becomes a different pedigree when there is competition for his place. Don’t forget he’s a regular French international starter who was one of the main reasons they reached the 2016 Euro final as acknowledged by various players and their coach. He is also in the list of top 10 French international scorers that too in very less appearances. He may not be the most mobile of centre forwards but at 6’4″ in height, he certainly beats the opponent in various other technical aspects of the game, be it his strength, hold up play, heading or playing crucial passes. We can also use him with Lacazette or Alexis upfront like France uses Griezmann with Giroud, that will bring another dimension to our game play.

I know most of our fans are now behind Giroud to stay at the club, rightly so, if we consider his qualities and strong mentality. One thing I forgot to mention is his knack for helping us in crucial matches, like last season, be it his goal at Old Trafford in the dying minutes or that decisive pass to Ramsey in the FA Cup final to win us the Cup for the record 13th time. I know we have just bought Alexandre Lacazette for a club record fee but Olivier is all together a very different player. I am not saying he should be a starter but he should be kept at all costs if we want to challenge on multiple fronts as he brings variety to our squad (Perez most likely leaving too) and as I mentioned, he becomes an even greater threat with competition which eventually will be a boon for us.
