Recently, there has been much speculation, regarding how Unai Emery positions and plays both Aubameyang and Lacazette in this coming season. Regardless of how stupid it may sound not playing them together, in an interview with Spanish football author Marti Pernarnau this may, Emery said "If the ball is in play, you press. If the play stops, you reposition yourself. For me, the 4-1-4-1 is the system which facilitates this type of pressing...The 4-4-2 is designed more and more for zonal positioning. It's less aggressive, but is more difficult to get past.” If this is the case for the new season, we won't see the amazing striking duo of the two. This interview was in may, however, and since Emery would've seen the huge capabilities of the two players together, and perhaps changed his opinion. Such as the 8 goal demolition of Boreham Wood which was host to Aubameyangs 18 minute hat-trick.
Last season, Aubameyang and Lacazette scored a combined 24 goals for the gunners, taking into consideration Aubameyng joined halfway through the season, and Lacazette suffered confidence issues, suffered a string of injuries and was taken off at the 70th minute for most games he had a part in.
Later on in the interview, Emery went on to say "I am not ruling out the possibility of 4-4-2. That's not the idea I privilege, but if it allows me to be more competitive, then I'll go towards it without hesitating.” Evidently, Unai used 4-4-2 many times when in charge of Sevilla, in which he won 3 Europa League titles for 3 consecutive years.
However, when Unai managed money injected PSG he tended to play a 4-3-3 formation this was to corporate the trio of Cavani, wonderkid Mbappe and Tom Daly (cough cough Neymar) even with this front three, the Spaniard still had to leave out players of class, for instance, Di Maria and Draxler.
On my twitter page, I put it to you, asking you if you wanted to see Aubameyang and Lacazette start together with a 96% landslide towards the two accompanying each other. In my opinion, I see this as no surprise as the combined total of these two is nearly 100 million pounds so the fans would like to see the club get their value for money.
If Aubameyang and Lacazette were to play together as strikers, this would surely put Emery in the good books of the fans. But Aubameyang should be getting nothing less than 20 goals a season and the same goes for Alexandre. However, fans need to remember that they have only been playing together for a few months so maybe they'll start scoring more from November onwards! Only time will tell, maybe us fans will get a glimpse of what the future holds when we play Athletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in Singapore, this coming week!
