Some of the synonyms for the word legend are as follows: Great, genius, icon, superstar. Recently, we ran a poll discussing whether Aaron Ramsey deserved that very status as an Arsenal man. 75% of the poll concluded that Aaron Ramsey is an Arsenal legend.
So why is this in question? As most players come to the end of an 11 year stay at the club, they would be eyeing up a testimonial game. In terms of the "yes" campaign, it is very easy to point to his 3 FA cup wins, including two cup final winners. To look at the stunning individual goals against Liverpool (2013), CSKA (2018) and Fulham (with the help of some nice build up, 2018).
However, like so many of his era; Theo Walcott being the standout, but worthy mentions to Cesc, RVP, Wilshere, Sanchez and Giroud, there is a feeling that he could've achieved more. He was part of the teams that failed to win any trophy for such a long time until his big moment against Hull City in 2014, but he's also been a big part of the teams that have chronically fallen apart in the latter stages of title pushes, namely 2014 and 2016.
2014 is potentially slightly harsh as he was injured between January and March, and the general feeling is if he and Theo stayed fit, the title would've been in North London. But the one I look to is 2016. We had just beaten Leicester with Danny Welbeck scoring in what seemed like the 202nd minute, the plan was to push on and win the title. However, he like many others as already stated, faded away from this point, and invited Leicester to stun the world with a title win. Aaron Ramsey, like so many others, could've done more.
I had a read through the comments from the poll, and I saw a couple of interesting points. People mentioned he shouldn't be put in the same bracket as Henry, Bergkamp, Pires, Adams - agreed, although the standard we are comparing him to there is astronomical. Someone else stated that only legends stay at the club - disagree, as Henry, Vieira, Campbell and even Ian Wright all moved on.

In conclusion, Aaron Ramsey has been at Arsenal 11 years. He's part of a group of possibly unfulfilled potential, that didn't bring the league title their talent promised. However, he has given me, and thousands of others some of their happiest Arsenal memories, particularly in recent years. And he hates Tottenham.
Henry/Bergkamp level? No.
Arsenal legend? Almost certainly. Thank you Aaron, now go and score one more final winner...
Up the Arsenal.

75%, have they been Arsenal fans for 5 minutes? This club hasn't produced a legend for at least 10 years.
ReplyDelete2 and a half good years out of 11 doesn't make a legend.
I'd give him more hero status for the 2 FA cup winning goals but legend, no way.
