Another painful afternoon at the office for the almost hapless Unai Emery who just can't seem it get it right. Nine times out of ten though, he's at fault for his own undoing and certainly a back three at home to the side nineteenth in the table just shows how clueless he has become.
With Granit Xhaka still out of the fold and niggles to Holding and Kolasinac as well as an injury to Ceballos, it surely meant that the starting XI picked itself. But with Emery at the helm there's always something and its usually the start of his downfall for the day.
In the first half, Southampton were by far the better side creating real chances and threatening Leno's goal almost at will. It didn't take long for them to score either. Eight minutes in and Ings gave his side the lead after standard slack defending let the Saints slide home a quick free kick. Question marks over the ball's movement but needless to say it was Arsenal that let themselves down again. Alex Lacazette equalised ten minutes later but it was still miles from the standards Arsenal Football Club should be at.
The second half started with a revert to a back four. Pepe came on for the hard done by Chambers. Really, Sokratis is so obviously the catalyst for errors, slack play and needless risk taking...it should be him to lose out, not Chambers. That aside, Pepe may an immediate impression. He looked lively and it didn't take long for him to crash a volley against the bar but again, it just didn't happen for him. Another silly piece of lazy defending, this time from Tierney, awarded the Saints a disappointing penalty that James Ward-Prowse initially saw saved by Bernd Leno but he crashed in the rebound. Twenty minutes or so for the Gunners to save it and they barely managed to do so. Lacazette finally found the net in the ninety-sixth minute after sustained Arsenal pressure. The side though, was rightfully booed off at full time as well as chants of 'you're getting sacked in the morning' directed at Emery. Both fully justified of course.
Ratings (supplied by the usual ratings man @groningergooner)
We'd normally rate Unai Emery before rating his players but here there is absolutely no point in doing so. Everyone knows exactly how he's doing in charge and it's a complete waste of your time to read us waffling about his permanent mishaps and complete inept ability to win football games.
Bernd Leno - 7
Barely at fault for his side's lack of awareness, saved a penalty too.
Hector Bellerin - 5
Average from the nippy full back who never really go going before being hooked late on.
Calum Chambers - 5
Pulled at half time perhaps unluckily but was caught sleeping for the first Saints goal.
David Luiz - 5
For someone with so much experience, he still doesn't lead to line very well at all.
Sokratis - 4.5
Disappointing again, can't seem to just clear the ball and not get into trouble at the back.
Kieran Tierney - 5
Got forward very well and is a great crosser but lapse defending cost, again.
Lucas Torreira - 5
An average day for Torreira who got stuck in well but was over ran in central areas.
Matteo Guendouzi - 6
Much like Torreira, he lost the midfield battle but dictated play quite well from deep but did force it at times.
Mesut Ozil - 6.5
Better from the German who was at the helm for everything good going forward. Still more to come though.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - 6
Not his best day in front of goal but stuck at it and was involved in a few good chances.
Alex Lacazette - 6.5
Two goals but actually there much else done. Not up to his usual dynamic standards but reliable nonetheless.
Subs
Nicolas Pepe - 6
Lively and direct, he made a real impression again but still couldn't find the back of the net.
Joe Willock - 6.5
A short cameo but still a solid one. Saved a certain goal in his own box late on.
Gabriel Martinelli - 6
Impressive again. He created Lacazette's late equaliser and consistently went at his man.
